Chapter Seven
It was Raw, Street, and Original.
The faint smell of cigarette smoke and weed filled Sonic’s nose as he followed Esso, Trouble and Rozay into the dark hallway of the warehouse. There were a few lights that hung from the ceiling for no reason at all. They had to be for decoration, because in no way shape or form were they providing any light. The bulbs were dim and flickering every so often.
He stepped on trash and kicked around empty soda cans and broken beer bottles. The noise from the boisterous crowd on the other side of the door had his adrenaline pumping. He could hear them rooting and hollering for the fight to begin. He’d been told by the unofficial referee that the other fighter had already taken his place in the ring.
For another ten minutes after that, Sonic sat in the room that had been appointed for him, listening to music and doing push-ups. For him, that was enough. His music, his team and his workouts were all he needed to hype himself up to fight. He had been doing it for so long that nervousness was no longer a part of his routine.
Esso sat nearby, rapping some original shit he’d written, while Sonic got dressed. The lyrics to one of his raps went so hard it gave Sonic a boost all in itself. It was raw, street and original. Once he figured he’d made his opponent wait long enough, he slid on the shorts and shoes that he fought in. He learned long ago that the longer they waited, the madder they got, which proved to be a much better fight. It also gave the crowd a boost.
The short walk to the room they would be fighting in heightened his excitement. There was a crowd, and they were ready. The vulgar language and shouting he could hear had him jumping up and down, growling and even slapping the center of his chest and head. His breathing picked up, and he popped his neck on both sides.
“You ready, my nigga?” Esso turned around and began slapping Sonic’s head and shoulders. “You fucking ready?”
Sonic nodded hard as he released a series of quiet growls. He and Esso bumped foreheads with one another, without hurting each other, before Esso turned around and snatched the door open. The announcer’s voice could be heard the moment the door to Sonic’s side opened. Esso motioned for him to cut the talking he was doing.
Before any fight, the only person that Sonic allowed to say anything regarding him was Esso. He was the smartest nigga he knew, and the only person he trusted not to say stupid shit that would blow his high.
Being that he had become one the hardest in the streets, he was able to make demands when it came to a fight he was participating in. One of them being no announcers while he walked in. He hated that shit to no end. Those niggas would say anything, sometimes ruining his focus.
